Itamar Ben Gvir contacted Jibril Rajoub. The source of power for both is in Hebron

A newspaper among enemies

Last week we reported that Marwan Barghouti recently asked Hamas to include him in the list of Palestinian prisoners to be released in a deal with Israel, for the return of Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin. This new Palestinian reality may promote a new Palestinian force of Rajoub, Barghouti, and Hamas that will threaten the government in Ramallah. Ben Gvir's appeal in this context may, on the one hand, widen the rift between him and the Palestinian Authority, which is almost impossible to bridge anyway, but on the other hand, open a realistic possibility for Ben Gvir to cooperate with a new Palestinian faction that strives to replace the current leadership.

According to a Palestinian source, Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, contacted Jibril Rajoub to check cooperation between them. The source of the two's power is in Hebron. We don't know if it was a phone call between them, or if a message was passed through a contact person between them.

Jibril Rajoub is considered by Abu Mazen as a bitter rival, and the close associates of the Palestinian president even recently threatened Rajoub that he would not dare run for the leadership of Fatah and compete with their candidate Hussein al-Sheikh. Abu Mazen and his associates believe that it will not be possible to determine the face of the Palestinian leadership after the retirement of the Palestinian president without moving Jibril Rajoub out of their way, since his power threatens the seniority of Ramallah.

Following Abu Mazen's threat, Rajoub has been trying in recent weeks to establish a collaboration with Marwan Barghouti to change the face of the Palestinian leadership together with him. Ben Gvir's appeal in this context may, on the one hand, widen the rift between him and the Palestinian Authority, which is almost impossible to bridge anyway, but on the other hand, to open up for Ben Gvir a realistic possibility to cooperate with a new Palestinian faction that strives to replace the current leadership.

This action of Ben Gvir may be revealed as contradicting the intentions of the Israeli security establishment, to strengthen Abu Mazen in order to deepen security coordination. Ben Gvir's action may also contradict the way Netanyahu wants to conduct the negotiations with Hamas for the return of Oron and Hadar, since in this context Marwan Barghouti may be one of the bargaining cards in Netanyahu's hands.
