A Palestinian political source told tipp that the beginning of a new era in Palestinian politics may be after Abu Mazen's expected speech at the Security Council, probably in November. It is not clear if Abu Mazen himself will announce a new era, and crown Hussein al-Sheikh as his successor officially, but in practice he has decided that it will be so. Abu Mazen's way of political action does not include a multitude of political statements, therefore the leaks in this matter on behalf of his associates are already starting now. Elevating al-Sheikh to replace Abu Mazen will be accompanied by the paving of his new political path as the senior Palestinian leader and the clearing of obstacles that may stand in his way. The main obstacle in the eyes of the current Palestinian leadership is Jibril Rajoub, and at the top of Fatah, it has already been decided to move Rajoub out of the way by any means necessary, and to open a non-belonging route that does not include Rajoub's breathing in his back.
Abu Mazen had hoped to end his term by having the Palestinian Authority join the United Nations as a state, but the US would veto this in the Security Council, so this move is now impractical. The Palestinian source who spoke about the new political era in Ramallah refused to refer to Marwan Barghouti in his words, but apparently the Palestinian Authority of Abu Mazen will try to reach an agreement with Barghouti, one that will include Israel, according to which he will let Hussein al-Sheikh take office, and the reward for his good behavior Barghouti will receive from the PA as well as from Israel.
