First, the chances of Lapid entering the prime minister's office during this term, in the opinion of many in the political system and extensive sections of the press, have greatly diminished.

This is the main political development that has taken place since Lapid emphatically told his listeners in Ramallah that the chances of him resuming negotiations with them are zero. But why is Lapid now saying, according to the Palestinians, to Hussein al-Sheikh, that the chances of him surprising in the Palestinian arena are high? It is possible that Lapid estimates that the chances of being prime minister in this term of the government are indeed very small, and he must already build the foundations of his next coalition. And experience has taught him, and all of us, that the Yesh Atid party will need the Arabs in the next election, no less, and perhaps even more than it needs them in the current coalition, and in the current reality one route to the Arab parties, probably passes through Ramallah.
