This week, a reconciled picture was published in Gaza: Hamas police are holding a Fatah gathering in the Unknown Soldier Square in Gaza, to mark the establishment of the Fatah movement. Anyone unfamiliar with the subtleties would fall for Hamas' illusion that the extremist Islamic movement gets along well with Fatah in Gaza, especially when it is up and Fatah down as in the picture, and it may be desirable, the picture suggests, to copy this model to Ramallah as well.
So first in Ramallah they will prefer to jump from a tall building in Tel Aviv before handing over the keys to Hamas, and secondly, the Fatah movement in the West Bank is not similar to the Fatah movement in Gaza. Fatah in Gaza cooperates with Hamas and in the past even participated in launching rockets into Israel, Hamas has domesticated it well. Fatah in the West Bank, on the other hand, is hostile to Hamas, and figures in the movement call it an Islamic dictatorship, although the leadership in Ramallah is also very centralized.
