נשיא איראן הורה לשר החוץ האיראני ולמשרד לאיכות הסביבה "לנהל מו"מ עם מדינות שכנות שאחראיות לזיהום האוויר בערי איראן". הנשיא אברהים ראיסי לא חידד בפומבי את הדברים ולא נקב בשמה של המדינה אותה הוא מאשים בזיהום אוויר, שמשבש את החיים בערים רבות ובהן טהרן. ראיסי רק אמר כי "אזרחים לא יכולים לראות מידי יום מציאות כזאת"

את דבריו של הנשיא לשר החוץ שלו, השלימה העיתונות האיראנית, ונקבה ללא כחל ושרק בשמה של המדינה אליה התכוון ראיסי בדבריו, ואשר אחראית לזיהום האוויר באיראן: טורקיה.

העיתונות האיראנית אף הבהירה את האופן אשר בו הביאה טורקיה לזיהום האוויר בטהרן ובערים נוספות: הטורקים לפי הטענות האלה בנו סכרים וחומות על נהר אראס בנקודת הגבול בין שתי המדינות. המבנים האלה הם אשר לפי הטענות גורמים להיווצרות של סופות חול, אשר מזהמות את האוויר באיראן. זיהום האוויר באיראן, קובעת ע"כ העיתונות האיראנית, משבש את החיים, את העבודה במשרדים, ואת הלימודים באוניברסיטאות ובבתי הספר.

יתכן כי עליית המתח בין המדינות, והאשמה הנוקבת, אפילו בוטה במובן הדיפלומטי, כלפי טורקיה, נובעות מההתחממות היחסים בין טורקיה וישראל. עם זאת צריך לומר כי הנהר אראס כבר גרם בעבר למחלוקות בין המדינות אשר בשטחן הוא עובר ובהן טורקיה ואיראן.

The Iranian president has instructed the Iranian foreign minister and the Ministry of the Environment to "negotiate with neighboring countries that are responsible for air pollution in Iranian cities." President Ibrahim Raisi has not publicly sharpened things and has not mentioned the name of the country he accuses of air pollution, which disrupts life in many cities including Tehran. Raisi only said that "citizens cannot see such a reality every day".

The president's remarks to his foreign minister were completed by the Iranian press, which mentioned without hesitation the name of the country to which Raisi referred in his remarks, and which is responsible for air pollution in Iran: Turkey.

The Iranian press even clarified the way in which Turkey caused air pollution in Tehran and other cities: The Turks according to these claims-built dams and walls on the Aras River at the border point between the two countries. It is these structures, which, according to Iranian claims, cause the formation of sandstorms, which pollute the air in Iran. Air pollution in Iran, states the Iranian press, disrupts life, work in offices, and studies in universities and schools.

It is possible that the rise in tensions between the two countries, and the sharp, even blatantly diplomatic, accusation made against Turkey, stem from the warming of relations between Turkey and Israel. It should be said, however, that the Aras River has in the past caused disputes between the countries in whose territory it passes, including Turkey and Iran.
